Keep your hardware, kill every old key. Rekeying is faster and cheaper than replacing locks.
New home, lost key, tenant moving out, or one key that opens everything β all same day.
If your hardware is in decent shape, rekeying does the job for a fraction of the cost.
You have no idea how many keys exist for your new place, or who has them. Rekeying should be the first thing you do after closing.
Lost or stolen keys mean the lock is no longer doing its job. Rekeying makes every existing key useless within minutes.
Collecting keys back tells you nothing about copies. Rekeying between tenants is quick, cheap, and closes the question entirely.
Most homes have a different key for each exterior door for no good reason. We can key them all alike while we are already there.

Rekeying changes the small pins inside your existing cylinder so it works with a brand-new key, and every old key stops working immediately. The lock stays on the door. Nothing gets replaced, which is why it costs a fraction of new hardware and takes minutes per door rather than an afternoon.
The usual question is rekey or replace. If the hardware turns smoothly and looks sound, rekeying is the right answer nearly every time. If the cylinder is corroded, the key already sticks, or the lock is builder-grade hardware on its last legs, replacing it makes more sense. In coastal Broward, corrosion is a real factor on anything facing the weather.
Builder-grade locks in master-planned developments deserve a specific mention. Large communities are often fitted out by the same contractor, and it is not unusual for hardware to be keyed alike across multiple homes during construction. If you bought new, rekeying is not paranoia. It is closing a door the build process left open.
Landlords and property managers: turnover rekeys are routine work for us, and we can schedule several units in one visit for less than separate trips. If you run more than a handful of doors, ask about a master key system so one key covers everything while each tenant keeps their own.
